Planning skip-stop transit service under heterogeneous demands

Transit vehicles operating under skip-stop service visit only a subset of the stops residing along corridor. It is strategy commonly used to increase vehicle speeds and reduce patron travel times. The present paper develops continuous approximation model optimally design select form service, termed AB-type service. accounts for spatially-heterogeneous demand patterns. An efficient heuristic developed obtain solutions. These are shown be near-optimal variety numerical examples. Results also indicate that optimal designs outperform optimized all-stop in cases. found especially competitive when demands high, trip origins unevenly distributed corridor, patrons have relatively high values time. In these cases, system costs by as much 8%.
